We chose Jaco as our first stop simply because we're heading for the Pacific coast, and it's pretty direct out of San Jose only about a 90 minute drive. Which we thought would be all we could manage after almost a 12 hour flight! We weighed up stories of pot holes, rivers across roads, scary mountain passes and extortionate car hire against the ease of having a car, and came down on the side of having a car. So far no problems although the main roads aren't that well lit, suggest mainly driving in daytime if that can be arranged - and the roads seemed very very busy on Sundays for some reason, looked like people returning to San Jose after weekend at the coast ???

We have a fully equipped kitchen on our terrace, I'm sure it's vital for some, but can't think what we will use it for except the beer fridge !
Slightly jet lagged, we spent the day surfing and on the beach in Jaco followed by excellent Tuna steak for lunch, siesta at the hotel and heading off for sunset cocktails early evening ...
In town we had a good meal - although very expensive compared to other places
